This recipe should be called candied sweet potatoes or yams because when I go to the store I buy whichever is available and on sale.
But in preparing this webpage, I did some research and discovered that they are actually 2 distinct vegetables, from 2 different plant families.
There are some people who like one and hate the other. I can not tell the difference.
I discovered that the technical details are boring and often contradict each other.
Which is sweeter? I still do not know. Please sign up for my newsletter and let me know.
I do know that this recipe makes either sweet potatoes or yams taste great! It's like having a dessert, but eating your vegetables!
Boil potatoes until semi soft.
Peel and cut into slices (horizontally).
Place in buttered baking dish.
Sprinkle top with cinnamon and nutmeg
Combine butter, salt, vanilla, sugar, water in pan and boil for 3 minutes.
Pour this syrup mixture over potatoes.
Bake in oven at 350 degrees for 1 to 1/4 hours, basting occasionally.
